Her jobs get complicated when a gorgeous man keeps appearing requesting her help.

Grayson, a fellow dreamwalker, is stuck in the dream realm while a stranger inhabits his body. He needs Emory’s assistance in the waking realm, which he can’t visit if he can’t get back into his body.

Once Emory is convinced Grayson’s not a figment of her imagination, they concoct a plan to lure the body snatcher out. But as Emory begins to fall for Grayson, the line blurs between him and the stranger who inhabits his body. She must keep it together to get close enough to discover his secrets, or divide her very soul if she can’t bring the man she loves back.

A Lyrical Press Urban Fantasy Romance

EXCERPT:

I’d run out of options.

He hurled me at the wall and I slumped down it. This dream needed to end, but my aching head scrambled my thoughts. I sought out my body and the room blurred, but I wasn’t going home. I was losing consciousness–in a dream. This couldn’t happen. Could it?

I squinted at my attacker as my vision dimmed. He sneered at me and then disappeared. I blinked. Where had he gone? My tunnel vision provided no clues. With forced concentration, things came into focus. Now two men–my attacker and another on top of him–struggled over the fireplace poker.

I continued seeking my body while deciphering the situation. One of the men grabbed the makeshift weapon, raised it and thrust it into the man on the floor. The victor turned to me.

I stared into his golden eyes.

“Emory?”

“How do you know my name?” My consciousness slipped making my words heavy.

He knelt in front of me. “Are you okay?”

I shook my head.

“You need to get back to your body.”

“Yeah,” I murmured.

“Try hard to concentrate. Find your life cord. Feel its pull. It’s right there, ready to bring you home. Your body’s waiting, go to it.” His voice soothed and the tingling energy of my spirit connecting with my body ran through me.

“Have you been looking for me?” I asked, as my spirit fluctuated between worlds.

“Just go home. I’ll find you again.” I nodded in drowsy agreement as I drifted out of Clare’s dream into one of my own.

My head pounded and the metal park bench was unforgiving to my achy body. I needed to meet with someone but didn’t remember whom. I rubbed at my head and looked around. The sunlight aggravated the throbbing. Casting my gaze downward offered minimal relief.

A soft shuffling came nearer. I stared up into the handsome face of a stranger.

“Hi, Emory.”

“Do I know you?” I asked, rubbing my head again.

“I’m Grayson. I’ve been searching for you. I think you can help me.” His gentle tone stirred a fleeting memory.

I studied him. “How’s that?”

Someone called my name, and I looked over my shoulder. Nothing.

Grayson glanced behind me too. He continued with more urgency. “I’m stuck and I need you to help me get home.”

My name rang out again, louder.

“Johnathan?” I searched for my friend.

“Emory, I know you have to get back, but next time I see you, will you talk to me? Please?”

“I think I hit my head. I don’t know why I keep dreaming about you, but this isn’t real.”

“It’s real. I’m real.”

The voice calling my name became more demanding. My dream faded.

“Emory? I’ve arranged a meeting for us, soon. Please talk to me, I need y–”

My eyelids inched open.

Mae Clair: Liking the Liebster

Last week, I had the pleasure of being nominated for the Liebster Award by the wonderful Jessi Gage. Jessi has recently released a fantasy romance called WISHING FOR A HIGHLANDER that I highly recommend. I’ve fallen in love with her hunky hero, Darcy, a 16th Century Scot who comes to the aid of a 21st Century pregnant museum worker when she’s transported to his era. Visit Jessi’s blog to learn more about her and her delightful novel. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

liebster-awardSo how does the Liebster Award work?  Here are the rules:
Thank the person who nominated you (thank you, Jessi!).
Post eleven random facts about yourself.
Answer eleven questions asked by the person who nominated you.
Think of a new set of eleven questions and nominate eleven others to answer them.

My eleven random facts:
1. I love gypsy-style clothing
2. My nickname in high school was “Starchild”
3. I have a bizarre fear of bears
4. I am madly in love with the character of Aloysius Pendergast, created by authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

From a party a few years ago (my hair was a lot shorter). That's my aunt with me. I can always count on her to be a dancing partner!

5. Someday I would like to buy a Jaguar (the car, not the animal!)
6. I prefer small gatherings to large parties
7. I can’t whistle
8. I love to be outside when it’s warm and windy
9. I’ve always loved vegetables, even as a kid
10. I am an avowed ‘cat person’
11. I love, l-o-v-e, LOVE to dance!

Jessi’s eleven questions:
1. Who was your idol growing up?
I had several…Michael Landon, Paul McCartney, David Soul, David Hedison and David Cassidy. Hmm…guess I liked a lot of Davids! 🙂

2. Who motivates you to be the best you can be?
My husband. I’m good at motivating myself most of the time, but when I hit a wall, he’s the one who helps me over it.

3. What’s your favorite morning ritual?
Coffee!  It used to be tea until hubby and I discovered Keurig.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My office. Decorated with balloons and bags of chips!

4. Fudge or salty snacks?
Salty. I’m addicted to chips. Several years ago on my birthday, my staff at work filled my office with small bags of Middleswarth chips. They were everywhere–on my desk, my file cabinet, the bookshelves, windowsills. Needless to say, my chip addiction is well known 🙂

5. Beer or wine?
Wine, but it has to be dry.

6. What’s the biggest challenge you face as a blogger?
Making time. I love to blog and rarely lack for content/ideas. It’s just squeezing the hours from a day that is usually overflowing to begin with.

7. What’s your favorite season?
It used to be spring, but I find myself leaning more toward summer these days.

8. Where do you go to get away from stress and regroup?
I don’t necessarily have a place as much as a mindset. I like to read or work on a WIP. In warm weather, I love relaxing on my back porch and deck.

9. If you’re a writer, how many books do you aim to write per year? Are you making your goal?
Two books per year. So far so good, but it’s hard with juggling a full-time job.

10. Who’s on your ereader right now?
WISHING FOR A HIGHLANDER by Jessi Gage! LOL!

11. If you look out the window right now, what do you see?
A large white cross. It’s on the church in a field behind my house.

1. What was your favorite book as a child?
2. What famous person from history do you admire most?
3. If you could have a superpower, which would you choose?

Mae Clair: Do You Collect Stars? BOTY Award 2012

Blog of the Year Award 3 star jpegApparently I do. I didn’t expect it, but Calisa Rhose nominated me for my third 2012 Blog of the Year Award. I’d already been nominated previously by Kitt Crescendo and Sheri de Grom. All of these ladies are gems in the blogging universe.

Calisa, one of my sister authors at Lyrical Press, has an amazing ranch home blog that you just have to check out! It’s loaded with all manner of goodies from guest authors and cover reveals to visiting editors and friendly chit-cat. No matter what the topic or day there is always a warm ranch welcome to make you feel right at home. Many thanks to Calisa for the nominating me for this honor!

So how does it work? The rules are pretty straightforward:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award –http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5 You can now also join our Facebook page – click the link here ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook page- https://www.facebook.com/groups/BlogoftheYear/and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin, you receive the ‘1 star’ award. Every time you are given the award by another blog you can add another star! There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

Which means that you can check out your favorite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

6-stars-image

So here are my nominations for the 2012 Blog of the Year Award:

Renita Pizzitola
Renita is one of my sister authors at Lyrical Press. Her debut novel, GOSSAMER released on the same day as WEATHERING ROCK which put us both on the same learning curve (although I think Renita was far ahead of me, LOL). She’s a prolific writer with the 2nd book in the GOSSAMER series of YA books already under contract and her adult urban fantasy romancel, DREAM ON, releasing in March. Her blog, Think Whimsy, is a great place to find info on new releases, Celtic folktales and writing whatnots. Drop by and treat yourself to some whimsy!

Deborah Palumbo
Deborah tells stories of vampires, romance and mystery among other genres. She’s the author of THE UNDEPARTED SERIES, wherein you’ll get your fix of sexy vamps. She has an active blog that enjoys a steady flow of guest authors, promos and book releases, plus a fun feature called Flip-Flop Friday. Friendly and outgoing, Deborah has been a delight to get to know.

Sheri de Grom
Sheri honored me with this award earlier but I really want to pay it forward again. She has been so supportive of me from day one, and such a delight to get to know. Even more so, her personal story is amazing and inspiring, a testament to the bond of soulmates and love. Visit Sheri’s blog for reviews on women’s fiction, thought-provoking posts on Medicare reform, mental health, and support for our military. The beautiful bridge that graces her header is a gateway to the myriad treasures you’ll discover within.

Thanks again to Calisa for my third star (makes me feel like a star collector…kind of cool since constellations play a role in my upcoming release, TWELFTH SUN). I hope you get a chance to visit the blogs I’ve highlighted. They’re all gems, worthy of some glittery starshine! 🙂

Mae Clair: The Lovely Blogger Award

The wonderfully prolific Kitt Crescendo recently nominated me for the One Lovely Blogger award. If you’re not familiar with Kitt’s blog theinnerwildkat you need to hop over and start reading pronto. She’s brilliantly creative and always delivers a thought-provoking post. Thanks for the nomination, Kitt!

So how does this particular award work? Well, to start I’m supposed to share seven random tidbits about moi. Yes I realize the anticipation is tantamount to a lunar shuttle launch, but try to restrain yourself while I collect my thoughts. 😉

Ready?  Here goes:

  1. I’ve always been a romantically idealistic dreamer. You never expected that, right? In high school I was known as “the Starchild.”
  2. I am addicted to most anything related to Sherlock Holmes, especially the BBC series SHERLOCK, and Robert Downey Jr.’s brilliant portrayal of my favorite detective. I’m currently suffering from Benedict Cumberbatch withdrawal.
  3. I love disaster movies and plague movies. They’re a guilty pleasure. The strange part is I tend to think they fall flat once the disaster happens. I love the spine-tingling string of circumstances and discoveries that lead to the ‘event,’ but not so much the aftermath.
  4. I was collecting anime and manga before most people knew what it was, and have a pristine collection.  Hmmm…must throw some of that stuff on eBay.
  5. I am in love with Aloysius Pendergast. My world will come to a screeching grinding halt on December 11, 2012, when Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child release the next book in their series. Time must/will stand still until I can devour it.
  6. I love warm windy days and stormy skies, especially together.
  7. As a teen, I volunteered for the Red Cross and held multiple medical certifications.

Now for the Rules of Participation:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
    Thanks, again, Kitt!
  2. List seven random things about yourself.
    Done! Riveting facts above.
  3. Nominate fifteen other awesome bloggers.
Wow, fifteen is a lot, but here are my nominees for those of who’d like to participate:

Alicia Coleman
Angela Quarles
Calisa Rhose
Christine Warner
Donna Cummings
Jessi Gage
JM Stewart
Karen Michelle Nutt
Kate Meader
Kate Warren
Maryellen Brady
Renita Pizzitola
Stanalei Fletcher

Okay, ladies ~ spill the beans on your blogs. What would you like to share about yourself? 😀

Mae Clair’s Wizards with Words: Renita Pizzitola

Hello and welcome to another Wizards with Words interview.  Today, I’m welcoming Renita Pizzitola to my blog. Renita is a sister author at Lyrical Press and, like me, has a debut novel releasing on October 8th.  Everything about her young adult novel, GOSSAMER (book one of the GOSSAMER series) hooked me the moment I heard about it. From the title, to the beautiful cover and compelling plot, I knew this was going on my TBR list.  I love Celtic folklore any anything related to the Fae. But I’m getting ahead of myself. (Can you tell I’m excited?) Renita is a prolific writer with two other novels already under contract with Lyrical Press.

Renita, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what prompted you to begin writing?

Renita: I’ve always loved to write. Teachers encouraged it, my family encouraged it, but I never really went for it. I’ve always been a reader and dreamt of being an author. But that’s all it was—a dream. It seemed like such an impossibility. A normal person like me couldn’t get published, right? It took a life changing event for me to finally sit down and, not just write, but submit. I started the submission process for Gossamer in September 2011 and my life has been a whirlwind since. It’s hard to believe all the wonderful things that have happened in the last year. I’m so happy I finally took a chance and know I’ll never live with wonder or regret.

From what I’ve seen, you’re one busy lady. GOSSAMER releases on October 8th, book two of the series, GILDED is tentatively scheduled for next summer, and you also have an adult paranormal called DREAM ON, releasing from Lyrical in the spring.  You’re obviously a productive writer. Any tricks you’d like to share?

Renita: Honestly, for me, when an idea pops into my head it consumes me. When this happens, I write like a crazy person. Not even kidding. But I know not everyone can do this. My suggestion—make time to write, but don’t force something. If you aren’t feeling it, maybe that’s not the right direction for your story. Step back from it for a few days and let the story develop in your mind. When you come back to it, hopefully with fresh ideas, you’ll be more productive and eager to accomplish more. Also rough drafts are just that—rough. Don’t try to get the first draft perfect. Instead take this time to get the story on paper from start to finish, then worry about all the other details.

I’d love to hear more about GOSSAMER. Can you tell us about the plot and your
characters?

Renita: Gossamer is based on Irish legends in a modern day setting and ends with a classic fairy tale twist. Half of the story takes place in our ‘human world’ and the other half takes place in the magical faery realm known as Tír na nÓg. It was fun researching for this series and has appearances from various legendary beings, each providing their own unique spin on the story.

The story focuses on Kyla, who goes by Kylie. She’s never really considered herself to be anything special—just a normal girl coasting somewhere between ‘popular’ and ‘nobody’. But when she meets Grant things begin to change. She soon discovers she’s part of an elaborate plot to save two children, and now she’s in danger. With her life in Grant’s hands, she flees to a world she never even knew existed, but as more secrets are revealed she discovers her new life comes with a price—her freedom.

The YA genre is exploding all over the place, and I find myself reading it more often. What originally attracted you to this type of writing?

Renita: Simple answer—firsts. As a teen you experience many ‘firsts’. A big one, and my personal favorite, is the feeling of falling in love. It’s a good feeling and everyone remembers that first time. I love telling that story. I also think YA focuses on the moments that shape a person’s identity—discovering who they are and who they ultimately want to be. My characters make bad choices, take chances, and sometimes completely humiliate themselves, but in the end that’s expected. They’re growing up, have their whole lives ahead of them, and I get to tell the story of how it all began 🙂

J.K. Rowling blew the door wide open for YA and Stephanie Meyer and Suzanne Collins kept the momentum going. I’m a huge Cassandra Clare fan, and am eagerly looking forward to the final releases in her Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments series. What about you?  Any favorite authors and/or books in the genre?

Renita: I’m a big fan of YA in general and have many authors I love to read, but if I were to pick only one it’s Richelle Mead. Her heroines are strong, independent, and funny. She has amazing worldbuilding and I love the way she incorporates myths and legends into her books. Slap her name on a book and I’ll read it, she never disappoints.

When you begin a new manuscript, which do you develop first — characters or plot?

Renita: Hmm, that’s a tough one. I’d say plot and main characters coincide, and secondary characters come later. First, I get an idea about some sort of big event happening to a specific type of person, then I start hammering out the details. The other characters tend to develop as I go. In Gossamer, Kylie’s best friend, Lexie, was originally going to be minor. Every girl needs a best friend and she was that person. But as the story developed, so did Lexie’s character. I find it funny when people read Gossamer and later tell me how much they loved Lexie considering originally she wasn’t going to have a big role, but her spin on life couldn’t be ignored, which is why I think people love her (I love her too by the way). I’ve even had a request to write ‘her’ story. But not to worry, she’s in book two with all her crazy Lexie antics….possibly even crazier.

Any words of advice for a new writer looking to break into the YA field?

Renita: It’s definitely a tough market. There’s a lot of great YA out there right now and it’s hard to get noticed, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write YA if that’s what you love. Just be sure you are writing your story and not what you think young adult readers want to see. What may be flying off the shelves today, probably won’t be the same by the time your manuscript is completed. I also think the growing New Adult market is a wonderful opportunity for many writers with characters stuck in the middle of teen and adult. I’m glad to see the publishing world is beginning to recognize it as an under-served market. All those YA authors who’ve heard the “your character’s too old for young adult” are beginning to find homes for their work.

Would you like to take a moment to tell us about GILDED, book two of the GOSSAMER series and DREAM ON, your adult novel?

Renita: Absolutely!

GILDED is a continuation of Kylie’s story. She still has a lot to learn about herself and a happily-ever-after to find. In this book, new elements of Irish Legend are introduced and Kylie undergoes some big changes! She also uncovers a prophecy and quickly realizes the girl she is destined to be, isn’t the girl she wants to be.

The idea for DREAM ON came to me as I tried to keep my mind off of Gossamer’s adventure in submission land. In the end, I had so much fun writing it. It’s about Emory who is a dreamwalker which is basically someone with the ability to travel into the dream realm. She uses this ability to run a lucrative business ending nightmares, but not all nightmares are scary…some are mortifying which leads to very amusing jobs. Soon she meets Grayson, a fellow dreamwalker, and when he asks for her help in finding his body-snatcher things get crazy.

Okay, final question, just because I’m curious . . . who or what is your favorite mythical character and/or creature and why?

Renita: That’s a hard one. I don’t know if I have a specific favorite character/creature but I’m a sucker for mythology and legend. I love how these tales explain natural phenomena. If I were to pick one in relation to my Gossamer series, I think it’s safe to say I wouldn’t mind having a grant around 😉

Renita, thank you again for visiting my blog and taking the time to do an interview with me. I wish you much success with your upcoming releases and will definitely be in line to buy GOSSAMER for my Kindle Fire.

Renita: Thanks for having me, Mae. It was great visiting with you!

GOSSAMER EXCERPT:

“It’s kind of ironic our rendezvous point is at the corner of Magnolia and Pansy.” I chuckled. Grant looked at me and arched an eyebrow. He was so cute when he did that. “You know Pansy.” I got nothing. “It’s a joke. You know we are making our great, big, daring escape from Pansy Lane.” He still looked confused. I shook my head. “Never mind.” He didn’t press for an explanation. I shot him a sidelong glance. “Are all grants as serious as you?”

The corner of his mouth tugged up. “I can’t say all, but most grants are guards. Serious comes with the job.”

“So, you’re a guard?” He nodded. “Hmm.”

“Hmm, what?” A smile still played at the corners of his mouth.

“I’m not surprised. You’re observant and cautious. Protective. But, I guess that comes with the job, too.”

“Protective?” His tone doubtful as he repeated my word choice. “I don’t know about that. My job is to sense danger and act upon it if necessary. Safety–I provide safety. I think protectiveness is fueled by emotions, typically, and that goes beyond my job description.”

I was taken aback by Grant’s comment. It seemed almost cold. “But, you told my parents you’d protect me?”

We finally arrived at our destination and I could see Conor already waiting. Grant stopped and looked at me.

“And I will,” he said and walked away.

I was locked into place. My brain incapable of processing his comment and walking at the same time. Was that his way of saying he cared about me? Which really didn’t mean much. I cared about my friends, too. Oh, but I really wanted him to mean something more. Don’t read too much into it. I forced my mind to clear and approached the guys.

Grant filled Conor in on Lexie’s plans to pick us up. He seemed to like the idea of not having to walk the entire way and I could have sworn he liked the idea of seeing Lexie one last time.

The three of us stood silently waiting for her. The humid night air left my skin clammy. A few minutes later a black car pulled up alongside the curb. The tinted passenger window glided down and Lexie peered out at us.

“Need a ride?” She asked with a wicked grin. I grinned back. I was going to miss her. I opened the door and decided to let the boys fight over who got the front seat. Grant stopped me and told me to sit in the front. Although I’m sure he was being a gentleman, I had a strong feeling they didn’t want to deal with the onslaught of questions she was sure to have.

They squished into the back and I climbed in. I pulled my seat up as far as possible, feeling sorry for Grant as he tried to contort into such a small space. I felt bad for Conor too, of course.

As soon as we were buckled, Lexie’s car coasted onto the quiet street.

“Okay, first where to?” She looked at me expectantly. I glanced back at the boys. Grant spoke up giving her directions. She nodded, not even caring that we were asking her to drive us practically out of town.

She laughed. “It’s pretty funny you’re making your big getaway from Pansy Lane.”

“Thank you!” I over exaggerated my words and rolled my eyes at Grant. “See. Joke. Funny.” He grinned and shook his head. I faced front again as my heart fluttered from the adorable way he looked at me.

Mae Clair: The Sunshine Award

Hey, everyone and happy Thursday! I’m skipping my maybe-might-become-weekly-haven’t-decided-yet Thursday Thirteen because I’m excited to say Kathleen Doyle nominated me for the Sunshine Award. Wow! If you haven’t figured it out by now, I tend to get jazzed about these things. 😀 Kathleen, thanks so much for thinking of me and my humble blogging haunt.

So how does the Sunshine Award work? ‘Tis fairly simple:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you *waving to Kathleen again*
  2. Post the award icon (see above. Nice, huh?)
  3. Answer the questions below
  4. Nominate ten other bloggers.

Fun, right? And you knoooow you won’t be able to sleep until you find out what my favorite color is. Make yourself comfy and I promise not to keep you in suspense. 😉

  1. What is your favorite Christmas/festive movie?
A Christmas Carol. I can’t tell you how many different versions I’ve seen. I never tire of seeing this tale retold. Definitely my favorite Christmas movie, but I also have an extreme fondness for Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Will Farrel’s Elf.
  2. What is your favorite flower?
I’m a traditional romantic. I’ve always loved red roses best.
  3. What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage?
As boring as it sounds, water. I drink it constantly. I don’t like sodas, or any type of sweet drink. I do love my Keurig coffee maker but I can only drink so much coffee before my stomach protests.
  4. What is your passion?
My hubby. Isn’t that romantic? 🙂
Okay, the love of my life aside, writing is definitely numero uno, but I also love reading, history, folktales and cats.
  5. What is your favorite time of year?
Spring. Because everything is so new and green and lush, with the promise of summer hovering around the corner. After the cold and stark desolation of winter, I love the rebirth spring ushers in.
  6. What is your favorite time of day?
Twilight, when the fading light is laced with threads of pewter and silver. It’s positively magical.
  7. What is your favorite physical activity?
I love to dance! And I play a wicked game of ping-pong (stop laughing).
  8. What is your favorite vacation?
Favorite vacation spot: I love the beach, coastal towns and seaports. The eastern seaboard is like a second home but I still love visiting it several times a year. Favorite vacation memory: Sedona, Arizona. Red rock, blue skies, artisans everywhere, and Native American hoop dancing that was just amazing. Oh, and I ate rattlesnake!

Now I’m supposed to nominate ten other people for this award. Here they are, blogging buddies and writers who create fantastic worlds:

L. J. Kentowski
Loni Flowers
Stephanie Ingram
Donna Cummings
Christina McKnight
Renita Pizzitola
Alicia Coleman
