Get Your Ghost On #BadMoonRising

We all know that October is a time for ghouls, ghosts, and things that go-bump-in-the night. Friend, author, and sister blogger, Teri Polen, hosts a paranormal-centric event this time of year called Bad Moon Rising. I’m delighted to be her guest today, answering questions about Ouija boards and haunted houses among other things. Some of my answers might surprise you. Intrigued? You can find our interview here.

And while you’re visiting, I encourage you to poke around Teri’s blog haunt and check out her books. She’s a talented author of YA, horror, and sci-fi. If you’re not following  already, I encourage you to click the follow button on her blog and get to know this friendly, gifted writer. I’m already looking forward to her next release!

Gearing up for Halloween

silhouette of black cat sitting on tree branch at night in front of a large orange moonSpooky things are afoot!

I’m always jazzed this time of year, inspired by the numerous bump-in-the-night ghostie and goblin posts that pop up in the blogosphere. For someone who loves folklore and legend, October is a month for feasting on myth!

There are a variety of events taking place in the online world. I’m excited to be participating in two that really appealed to me.

Today, I’m visiting Teri Polen during her month-long Bad Moon Rising feature. All month long, you can meet new authors, discover new reads, and have trick-or-treat fun with the Halloween questions Teri poses for her guest. I hope you’ll pop over and say hello while I’m hanging out with Teri today.

Next week, I’ll be visiting Melanie Noell Bernard who is doing a month-long paranormal event called Hallo-WE-en that features creatures. Each day you’ll get to meet a different beastie. Today, my good friend and critique partner, Staci Troilo, shares the history and folklore of gargoyles at Melanie’s haunt in the blogosphere.

So, get your ghostie on and celebrate Halloween!

When #Cats Rule Your World by Mae Clair

Those of you who’ve been following my blog or a while know that I’m a cat fanatic. It’s been almost five years since I lost my last cat, Onyx, to cancer. I never thought I would last five years between felines given my OCD (obsessive cat disorder), but if I’d gotten another cat sooner (or later) I wouldn’t have met Raven.

Say hello to my latest companion.

cute black cat lying on a white and blue blanket, looking at cameraShe’s four months old and is a rescue from Castaway Critters. I’ve been prepping my house for her for weeks. Rather, I should say I’ve been prepping for “a cat.” I’m a planner, so I had completed an application to CC ahead of time, supplied references and a vet check, all so that I could get a cat the first week of October, after a brief visit to the beach. All neat and tidy, planned out perfectly—NOT!

I was approved ahead of time and started looking at the Castaway Critters website early. Big mistake. My willpower was shot by that point and I was in uber cat mode.

I knew I wanted another black cat. Why? Because they’re often left in shelters due to old superstitions, something I addressed in my novella FOOD FOR POE. I saw Raven online, went to meet her prior to my beach trip, and was immediately smitten. Once they put her in my arms, she started purring, and buried her nose in my elbow, I was a goner.

Hubby and I brought her home before our trip, but I made sure she had everything she needed while we were away.

I’m pleased to say she’s settled in just fine, passed her vet check with flying colors and has pretty much taken control of the house. Yeah, she rules my world.

Check out these photos of her lounging on my desk, and playing on her climbing tree. She has boatloads of energy, but she will curl up for an hour or three on my desk when I’m composing. Otherwise, it’s racing through the house in the morning and demanding play time at night.

Cute black cat lying in a circular bed on top of desk beside a computer screenClose up of a cute black cat in a circular bed
cute black cat on a indoor climbing pet tree with a small ladder at the bottom and tiers for laying at the topShe also has a fun pink “cube” that my cousin picked up for her. She absolutely loves the thing and uses it as play-time central. It’s springy, so she can crush it in all kinds of shapes (see second photo), zip in and out, and roll around like a tumbleweed (which she does frequently). Whoever invented this thing deserves his own private island–which I’m sure he has from profits. It’s quickly become her favorite toy, next to her Jackson Galaxy feather wand (not pictured) and her pink feather ball (that’s what she’s clutching in the cube).

Raven loves to be held, loves to snuggle (especially at night) and has boundless amounts of energy. When I took her to the vet, rather than hide timidly in her carrier she immediately hopped out, explored the whole room, then promptly plopped down and started grooming herself like she hadn’t a care in the world. She was found in a town not far from where I live called Steelton. Around here we say people are “Steelton tough” and I think she inherited some of that toughness despite the sweet exterior.

Given it’s October, and she looks like a Halloween cat, I thought would be the perfect time to introduce her. I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of Raven on my blog now and again. Now I just have to explain the Mothman to her 🙂

And if you’re looking for a Halloween read, you’ve come to the right place. My romantic suspense/mystery novel MYTH AND MAGIC is on sale now for only $.99.

Set during Halloween, it features plenty of shivers, hayrides, a lavish Halloween party and rumors of hauntings. Best of all—you’re invited!

You Are Cordially Invited to Attend a Halloween Party

Place:    The Breckwood Mansion
Coldcreek, PA

When:   Halloween Eve beginning at 7PM

Gothic looking woman wearing a long back gown and holding a ravenPlease come in costume. Mrs. Morgana Breckwood has gone to a great deal of time and expense to ensure this year’s annual Halloween party will make her previous events “ghostly” pale in comparison. And yes, the rumors are true. There is a slim possibility her son, Caith, might show. Not sure about a costume though. You know how he feels about Halloween.

Excerpt from Myth and Magic:

Veronica’s stomach clenched as a mixture of fear and dread skittered through her. The expression in her eyes must have betrayed her unease because Morgana took her by the arm and drew her aside. Across the hall, the caterer and florist were busily consulting with the head of Morgana’s household staff. Three workers wearing black shirts that proclaimed Ghosts & Ghouls, Inc. wheeled a life-sized coffin through the front door. Having attended a number of Morgana’s Halloween parties, Veronica knew trays would be fitted inside the open lid, bearing all manner of delectable treats.

“I know my son,” Morgana said, cutting through the noise and activity. “He’s stubborn, but he’s not stupid. He isn’t going anywhere, Veronica. He may not be willing to admit it, but he’s in love with you.”

“No.” She tried to draw away. “Don’t say that.”

“It’s the truth.”

She shook her head. “Caith’s terrified of love.”

“He’s terrified of loss.”

Veronica clamped her mouth shut. Morgana was right. Even if Caith wouldn’t admit it, she knew it was the defining emotion that had driven him all of his life. The reason he’d chosen a career designed to keep others safe, the reason he’d given his son another name, the reason he still couldn’t bring himself to visit Trask’s grave.

She wet her lips. “I have to see him.”

“Give him time first,” Morgana suggested. “Stuart said he was up all night working on the case. He’s barely slept and probably isn’t thinking clearly.” She smiled encouragingly, hooking her arm through Veronica’s. “You can stay and help me decide where the band should go. And the goblins. Did I mention we’re having roving goblins?”

Veronica managed a small smile. The Ghosts & Ghouls people were pushing a series of crates through the door. Tall ones, large ones, squat ones.

“Mrs. Breckwood,” a sandy-haired worker called. “Where would you like us to put the trolls?”

Cover Reveal: Myth and Magic by Mae Clair

Drum roll, please!  I’m pumped up, jazzed, and all around giddy to be splashing the cover of my upcoming romantic suspense novel, MYTH AND MAGIC, on my blog today. I was more than a little worried over how this cover would look when it landed in my lap.

Why?

Well, if you’ve read my recent releases, you know my writing is slanting heavily toward mystery and romantic suspense. I wanted the cover of my new release to capture the mood of the story which is set at a brooding home with an infamous past. The property has since been converted to a lodge that caters to corporate clients. Into this environment, strange and ghostly occurrences begin to take place putting a damper on business (would you stay at a place where a notorious murder took place?).

I asked for a cover without models, just setting.

With all of that in mind, take a look at the beautiful, spooky cover Kensington Publishing/Lyrical Press designed for me and let me know what you think!

Now do you see why I’m giddy?  I love it!  It’s everything I’d hoped for, perfectly capturing the tone of the novel.  And for those of you who like romance with your mystery and suspense, never fear, there is plenty of that too!

MYTH AND MAGIC is scheduled to release on June 9, 2015. In the meantime, you can preorder it on Amazon and add it to your Goodreads TBR List.

I’ll also let you in on a little secret…even though the book is releasing in early summer, the story is set during October and has a strong Halloween theme—including the climatic scenes which take place during a lavish Halloween party.  I think June is the perfect time to scare up a new read like MYTH AND MAGIC, don’t you? 🙂
