What’s a little engagement between friends?

Omar Esterly is married to his job. But when Omar sets his sights on a potential, family-oriented client, his confirmed bachelorhood becomes a problem. Fortunately, his friend and employee, Devi Boss, has the perfect plan…

Okay, so it wasn’t exactly Devi’s plan to become her friend’s fake fiancée. Lies aren’t her style. However, Omar offers her a big, beautiful raise – enough to track down the missing father she’s never known – and Devi reluctantly agrees to the whole engagement hoax…

This was supposed to be a no-strings-attached win-win for both Devi and Omar, but when they cross the line between friendship and…well, something more, Devi realizes she’s made a huge mistake that just might cost her both job and friend – falling for her fiancé.

EXCERPT:
“You’re game for anything, right?”

Devi compressed her lips and studied Omar through a narrow gaze, taking in the way his overly bright eyes concentrated on her face as if memorizing every pore. Her gaze traveled south to the non-existent rise and fall of his chest and how he pushed his suit jacket aside as he placed his hands low on his hips. He’d stopped breathing while he waited for her reply. That made her more nervous than anything. “Normally I am game for anything, but considering the man asking the question, I’m a little nervous.” She licked her lips.

Book cover for A Friendly Engagement, a romance novel by Christine WarnerOmar shook his head, swallowing her hands in the warmth of his. “No. This is a great idea. I can’t believe I didn’t see it before.”

“I’ll hold back on saying I’m glad I could help until I know what you’ve got pinging around your brain.” She tried to pull free of his grip, but he only grasped her fingers tighter. Her inner voice told her whatever plan he’d cooked up included her and she wouldn’t be thrilled with the role.

“Bartow wants a family-first firm. He wants a planner who is married, blah, blah blah.” He dismissed his unfinished words with the thrust of his chin.

Devi nodded, her mouth going dry. Was he planning to hire a wife, or about to propose?

“I might not be married, but what if I were engaged?”

She didn’t want to jump to conclusions about the proposal so she pasted on a tight smile. “Do you have a serious girlfriend hidden away I don’t know about?” The thought unsettled her, but she pushed aside the heaviness in her gut. Omar and relationships mixed like fire and ice. Not that women didn’t find him attractive and vice versa, but his true love would always be work. Most sane women wanted something more than a workaholic commitment-phobe.

He shook his head a bit too vigorously. “No. No.” His grip tightened, and she flexed her fingers so he’d loosen his hold. “Hear me out before you shoot me down.”

“I’m more curious than ever.” Again, she threw sand over that niggling feeling in her belly. She never jumped to conclusions. Living by the seat of your pants didn’t allow it, but…

Why start now? She rolled her shoulders in an effort to relax. Omar pulled her off to the side and out of the crowd moving past them on the sidewalk. His hands shook with excitement, and he swallowed hard before clearing his throat. Always calm and collected, his buildup unsettled Devi, and she tugged one hand from his grip and pressed it against the gurgle growing in her stomach.

“How about we announce our engagement? I could pull in some favors and have it in the press Monday morning. That’d still give Bartow enough time to invite us to the meet and greet. And—”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Devi’s stomach did a nosedive, and she yanked her other hand from his death grip and stepped back. She twisted one of the bangle bracelets on her wrist. “Our engagement? First off, I didn’t even know we were dating. And second, I am not going to help you get ahead by lying.”

Fifteenth-Century Highland Warrior Listens to Billy Joel… And Likes It

Thank you, Mae, for hosting me on my release day!

I’m really excited about my new release CHOOSING THE HIGHLANDER. This one is #3 in my Highland Wishes series, and it features a hero and heroine readers might remember from WISHING FOR A HIGHLANDER, Constance and Wilhelm.

Writing this one was super fun, because Connie is from 1981. As I researched this era, I remembered so many fun things about the 80’s.

Remember when a Sony Walkman was the height of technology? If you had one that could record as well as play back, you were one of the cool kids. As a child of the 80’s I remember those days well.

I remember the day I got my first Walkman and I wanted to play it for everyone at our family gathering. I was completely unprepared for the fact that there was no speaker, only headphones. I was like, “What? You can’t use it like a boom-box?”

I remember sharing music with a friend by detaching one of the headphones and holding it out in invitation. I remember making mix tapes by hovering over my father’s boom-box and hitting record and play as quickly as possible when a song I love started up on the radio. I would go through packs of batteries listening to mix tapes on my Walkman.

This little miracle of music delivery is by FAR my favorite product of the 1980s. In fact, a Walkman plays a pivotal role in CHOOSING THE HIGHLANDER.

To celebrate release day, I’m hosting a Rafflecopter giveaway on my blog. Drop by to enter the giveaway and take a fun 1980’s toy quiz. Skip directly to the giveaway here, if you want to enter with minimum clicks!

Here’s the blurb & buy links:

CHOOSING THE HIGHLANDER

As a mechanical engineer in 1981 Chicago, Connie designs plumbing systems. She has also designed her life to perfection, right down to the man she hopes to marry. But when Mr. Right proposes, she can’t say yes. A head-clearing vacation brings her to the Scottish Highlands, where her free-spirited twin wishes for Connie to find true love. Neither sister expects the wish to send Connie hurtling five hundred years into the past.

Wilhelm Murray, heir to the barony of Dornoch, hopes to one day hold a seat in parliament and bring urgently needed reform to Scotland. But everything changes when a woman slated for execution proclaims her innocence using the most peculiar language. Powerfully attracted to the brave beauty, he rescues her even though it means becoming a fugitive and forfeiting his dream.

As Connie and Wilhelm evade capture, she discovers his passion for justice. Scotland needs his ideas. It needs him. And so does she. But in order to clear Wilhelm’s name, she will have to turn her back on everything she’s worked so hard for and embrace the magic of love.

EXCERPT

“Tell me your name,” he commanded.

Her eyes flashed in that way of hers that told him she didn’t make a habit of following orders. Och, her brazen spirit drew him from the moment he first saw her, when she’d been demanding Ruthven let her go despite being nude, bound, gagged, and outnumbered. Such bravery! Such intrepid determination!

“You told me no questions tonight.” Her voice scratched like sun dried wool not yet tamed into softness. The damage to her tender throat and lungs made him lust to slay her abusers all over again. Noticeably absent was her feigned English speech.

He suppressed a grin, wondering if she’d done it intentionally. “Simply telling me your name would have required fewer words than the rebuke, my lady, if your throat pains thee.”

“It wasn’t a rebuke.” A look of affront tugged her eyebrows low over those captivating eyes. How was it her every expression affected his viscera? With each change in her features, his stomach leapt and dove like a hawk in pursuit of prey. “Only a reminder.” The briefest flicker of nervousness belied the stubborn lift of her chin.

The kiss had made her uncertain. Before, she’d approached him as an adversary, though why she should do so, he could not guess. Now, she recognized the connection between them, but, if he guessed correctly, she feared it.

The lass needed time. She needed food and rest. He would ask no more of her tonight. Not even her name. It mattered not. His heart knew her regardless of what she called herself.

“Consider me reminded, sweet lady.”

It’s another blog touring day for me as I hop over to Romance Novel Giveaways to share a post about character and place names. I don’t know about you, but naming characters is my favorite part of starting a new novel. I get seriously jazzed by the prospect! 🙂

Many times during blog tours, authors are asked to answer interview questions. I enjoy doing that, but I like it even better when I’m able to share a guest post. This one was a lot of fun to write.

Hop over to discover why I chose the names I did and what prompted the inspiration for each. As before, you’ll have another chance to enter my giveaway for a $20 gift card to Amazon or Barnes and Noble (winner’s choice). And, of course, I’d be happy to have you say hello as my ECLIPSE LAKE blog tour continues. 🙂

And I’m also at Just Romantic Suspense today. This is one I follow on a regular basis, a fabulous blog that showcases new releases in the mystery and suspense genre. If you haven’t checked it out before, you might want to give it a look-see and drop me a hello, while I’m hanging out there. Happy Wednesday!

Summer Lovin’ Blog H0p and Wandering by Mae Clair

The Summer Lovin’ Blog Hop is still going strong, but I’m also wandering today. If you get a chance, join me on the Just Romantic Suspense blog, where I’m talking about my love of nautical folklore, the eastern seaboard and my new release, TWELFTH SUN.

In addition to the giveaway I’m doing on my own blog for the Summer Lovin’ Blog Hop, I’m holding one over there too. Hop over for a chance to win a Kindle or Nook copy (winner’s choice) of my romantic mystery, TWELFTH SUN.

And now, let the Summer Lovin’ continue…

SummerLovinBlogHopWelcome to the Summer Lovin’ Blog Hop! Over fifty authors and bloggers have joined together to give you the chance to win an awesome bundle of books as well as read some great posts. Be sure to visit each blog in the hop and comment with your email to increase your chances of winning. Each comment counts as an entry! Our lovely bloggers are also offering individual prizes so be sure to check them out.

So what is it about summer you love best?  The extra-long nights, fun-filled vacations, poolside lounging, or something else entirely? Maybe it’s indulging in summery foods like sweet corn, watermelon, soft ice cream or fresh strawberry pie. It could be ditching your shoes in favor of sandals or flip-flops, relaxing with a good beach read or finding the perfect picnic spot. Summer brings fireflies, fragrant white jasmine, sun-ripened berries, and the magical embrace of a poet’s twilight.

I love all of those things, but this summer I can add something new to the list.

August 5th marks the official release of TWELFTH SUN, my romantic mystery pairing an older woman with a younger man. I set the story in early June at a lavish seaside mansion in a small coastal town. Summer is my favorite season and the eastern seaboard of the U.S. is like a second home to me. What better time and place to have my hero and heroine match wits with an oddball assortment of characters as they compete in the treasure hunt for a 19th century marine artifact? Of course, there’s also the issue of their attraction to one another and the ten year age gap between them, but that was part of the fun in writing the story! 🙂

If you enjoy romance and mystery with an older woman and younger man, I hope you’ll give TWELFTH SUN a try.

twelfthsunwidgetTWELFTH SUN BLURB: The hunky young PhD knows all about seduction, but what does he know about love?

Reagan Cassidy is settled in her life. She has a thriving interior design firm, an upscale condo, two cats, and a goldfish. As a favor to her uncle, she agrees to team up with his marine archeologist friend to validate and retrieve a nineteenth-century journal, reputedly that of a passenger aboard the doomed schooner Twelfth Sun. Finding a hunky twenty-five-year-old coming out of the shower in her hotel room wasn’t part of the deal, but it’s hard to complain…

Dr. Elijah Cross is cocky and he knows it. He enjoys trading barbs with the lovely Reagan. Barbs, and some innuendo. He can tell she’d rather get back home to her business than stick around for the extended treasure hunt they’ve been talked into, but he’s fine with the situation. At least, until the “clues” start getting personal.

Reagan finds Dr. Gorgeous is as skilled in matters of the heart as he is behind the lectern. Throw in a series of clues which mean more to Elijah than he’ll explain, several odd-ball competitors out to win the journal, a saboteur, and a lavish seaside mansion, and Reagan has enough trouble keeping her head straight, let alone her heart.

WARNING: Younger man, older woman, nautical riddles and romance.
