Mae Clair Presents: In His Corner by Vina Arno

Today, I’m welcoming a new guest author to my blog, Vina Arno, with her knock-out romance (I couldn’t resist 🙂 ) IN HIS CORNER. Vina is a Lyrical Press sister and dropped by to share some fun facts about the characters from her debut release. Check ’em out:

InHisCorner_VinaArnoIn His Corner: 12 Fun Facts about the Characters

By Vina Arno

My debut romance, In His Corner, starts with a singular encounter in the ER between Dr. Siena Carr and Tommy Raines, an Olympic gold-medalist boxer known as the Juggernaut. Their attraction is immediate, but as it turns out, they are opposites.

She was born into a rich East Coast family, while he comes from a blue-collar West Coast family. She’s an Ivy League graduate. He’s a college dropout. She’s four years older than him. All of these make for a tempestuous romance. Below are some fun facts about them.

The Juggernaut

  1. Tommy Raines, the most promising American boxer today, meets Siena Carr during a make-or-break point in his budding career—three months before a million-dollar fight, his first as a pro.
  1. He’s not only a fierce boxer, he’s also a talented wrestler. His smooth wrestling maneuvers in bed drive Siena wild!
  1. He’s a middleweight fighter, the same weight division as these famous champs: Jake “Raging Bull” LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Oscar de la Hoya.
  1. Although women are crazy for the Juggernaut, he has dated only one other woman aside from Siena.
  1. He lives in a former warehouse the size of a mini football field. It’s the only place he could find in San Francisco big enough for an indoor boxing ring.
  1. He lives with Iggy, a cream Labrador he rescued from an animal shelter. The dog is 11 years old and arthritic.

Siena Carr

  1. Her parents named her after Siena, the city in Tuscany, hence her name has only one “n” as opposed to Sienna, the Anglicized and more popular spelling.
  1. She has been traveling to Italy since she was eight. A self-professed lover of all things Italian, she feels spiritually connected to the country.
  1. She volunteers five to eight hours a week in a clinic located in the most hardscrabble part of Oakland.
  1. She’s a fashionista. She wears a Calvin Klein dress on her first date with Tommy, a red Christian Dior dress at her hospital’s fundraiser, and a Marc Jacobs ensemble at his fight in Las Vegas.
  1. She loves art-house films, which Tommy fondly describes as “snoozers.” She likes films by Terence Malick, Alain Resnais, and Ingmar Bergman.
  1. She’s allergic to animals, including Iggy. In spite of that, she grows to love the Labrador.

Book Excerpt:

Dr. Siena Carr dropped the clipboard on the counter and washed her hands. When she turned around, she gasped. “What are you doing?”

The Juggernaut was undressing. Before she could say another word, he was naked. A glorious sight that sent her heart racing and her face burning. Did he know that he looked like a sculpture by Michelangelo? Except for the tattoo on his right shoulder, this man was David incarnate.

She looked away abruptly, grabbing the clipboard. She didn’t even know his name! She looked at his paperwork. Tommy Raines. “Mr. Raines, please put on your clothes.”

She continued scanning his form. Occupation: boxer. Age: twenty-two. Weight: 160 pounds. Height: six feet. Blood type: O positive. No pre-existing health conditions. His temperature and blood pressure were normal. Reason for ER visit: a cut sustained from sparring.

She faced him. Thank God, he was clothed again.

“Sorry about that,” he said. “I thought you’re supposed to check me out.”

Did he just say check him out? “Mr. Raines, this is an ER, not a bar. I don’t check out patients. Do you mean to say check up?”

He smiled. “Yeah, check up.”

“I’m going to take care of your cut, but I’m not doing a checkup. If you need one, you should go to your primary care doctor.”

“I don’t like doctors. I avoid hospitals and clinics as much as possible, but my cut kept bleeding even after I showered. So here I am.”

Book Blurb:

No sex for almost a year could kill a guy, but when you’re the boxer known as the Juggernaut, it’s the price you pay for turning pro. Tommy’s fully dedicated to his craft, until he meets the incredibly gorgeous Dr. Siena Carr. Now he’s looking forward to taking on this prim and proper lady in a wet and wild workout…

Siena has seen many patients come through the ER, but none as sexy as Tommy Raines. With a nasty cut over his eye, she knows he needs stitches, but after he takes off his shirt, she needs some air. With rock-hard abs and taut biceps, it’s clear this man takes care of his body. And all Siena can think about is letting him take care of hers

Mae Clair Presents: Kyra Jacobs and Flirting With Fire #romance #firefighters

I’m super jazzed to have the delightful Kyra Jacobs on my blog today. Kyra is a Lyrical Press/Kensington Books sister author who is currently celebrating her newest release, FLIRTING WITH FIRE. Energetic, super supportive and friendly, Kyra also knows how to spin an enthralling tale. Please say hello!

Kyra, what attracts you most to your chosen genre?

The Happily Ever Afters. With as busy as my life is today, if I’m going to set aside time to dive into a book then darn it ,there’d better be a happy ending involved. LOL No tragedies or cliffhangers for me. When I write, I try to offer the same type of story resolution I prefer for my readers.

Well said! I love an HEA and can’t imagine reading a romantic novel without one. And as long as we’re talking books that intrigue us, give us the scoop on your newest release.

Book cover for Flirting with Fire by Kyra Jacobs shows a fire truck and fireman in silhouette against a gold backgroundFlirting With Fire is my second romantic suspense novel, and it just released this month. Technically, it’s the second in my Hometown Heroes series (Armed With Steele is book 1) but can either be read as a sequel or standalone novel. And while FWF follows a new set of main characters, fans of my first book are sure to see some familiar names woven into this story as well.

I enjoy when an author writes books that connect but also serve as a stand-alone. Without giving too much away, please share a bit about your favorite scene.

But I have so many! Hmm, let’s see. One of my favorites involves a hot shower, soap getting in Liz’s eyes, and her reaching around the shower stall door for a towel. That’s when a pair of shins beside the tub come into view. Naked, male shins…

LOL! I can see why that would be one of your favorite scenes. 🙂  How did you choose your setting?

I love to write about my hometown. We live in a terrific city, rich with history and yet with enough modern development to keep my storylines coming.

It sounds like you have an endless supply of inspiration! As a teaser, please share the first three sentences of your book.

(Ha, I’m giving you four ;-)… )

It all began with Herb Meyer’s happy ending.
Oh, sure, I’d heard murmurings at our post office. Dismissed stares from neighboring motorists at the gas station. Gossip is, after all, what keeps things interesting in small town U.S.A.

Great beginning! (and I’m glad you went for four lines 🙂 ). When you’re not writing (or reading) what do you do to unwind?

Tend to my flower gardens. There’s just something about working outside pulling weeds and/or dead-heading my perennials that helps to clear my mind.

That sounds relaxing. I have a mediocre green thumb and envy the beautiful flower gardens I see others tend. If a fairy godmother suddenly appeared and gifted you with an all-expense paid vacation, where would you go?

Anywhere with a quiet, warm, white-sands beach

Favorite comic book character: Ratbert

Food you never grow tired of: Ice cream. Never. Ever.

Sunset picnic or night on the town: Sunset picnic

Pie or cake: Cake, but only if there’s plenty of tasty, buttercream frosting involved…

Yum! I’m partial to pie, but having buttercream frosting does make it tempting. And I think you’re the first person who answered my comic-book character question, LOL.  It’s been great to have you here today, Kyra. I’ve already downloaded FLIRTING WITH FIRE for my Kindle and look forward to reading it. I absolutely love the cover–it’s one of my all time favorites this year!  Wishing you the very best with your release and many sales!

Look, touch, but don’t fall in love.

Massage therapist Liz Williams lives by one rule: never date a client. A rule she’s never had trouble following until she lays hands on fireman playboy Torrunn MacKay. Trouble is, Liz’s sexy new client is dating her arch-rival at work…and has a strange habit of appearing just before the fire alarm sounds.

Firefighter Torrunn MacKay has got it made: killer job, downtown condo with a view, and hot blonde girlfriend with no more desire to tie the knot than he has. But the surprise attraction he feels toward his new masseuse is threatening to change all that. And what’s with the string of fires that seem to follow her everywhere?

Can Liz mind her table manners and keep Torrunn at arms’ length? Will Torrunn put his commitment fears aside to keep Liz safe? More than hearts will be in jeopardy when the two start Flirting with Fire.

The Unexpected Curve Ball by Mae Clair

Dear Friends,

In the event you haven’t heard the news my publisher, Lyrical Press, has been acquired by New York house, Kensington Books. Lyrical will become the digital imprint of Kensington. While this opens new opportunities and potential for Lyrical authors, it’s also created some unavoidable issues.

For the present, until contracts can be signed between Kensington and its new roster of authors, Lyrical has pulled their books from online retailers. As I had just kicked off a blog tour for TWELFTH SUN, I’ve had to cancel that tour. I’m grateful to Literary Nook, my touring company, for their understanding of the situation. The book tour wouldn’t have made much sense without the ability for readers to purchase my titles. Even though they already had bloggers and reviews lined up, Literary Nook willingly cancelled the tour and invited me to contact them again whenever I am ready.

If you had planned to visit me during any of my stops, that tour is now in a holding pattern. It may be thirty to sixty days before my titles are available again. Hopefully, sooner than later. The good news is that if I sign with Kensington, WEATHERING ROCK and TWELFTH SUN will be available through POD as well as digital format. As soon as I know more, I’ll share the news. None of this however, changes what I had previously planned for indie pubbing SOLISTICE ISLAND and ECLIPSE LAKE.

It feels extremely odd not to have my titles available for purchase right now, almost as if a safety net is missing. When the dust settles, whatever the outcome, I believe it will be for the better. Apparently, 2014 threw me a curve ball right out of the box. An exhilarating one, but a challenge nonetheless as I work to get everything back in order. That pesky New Year, LOL!

So, although I’ve had to cancel my tour temporarily, new adventures await on the horizon!

Best to all of you,

Friday the 13th Fun by Mae Clair

It’s Friday the 13th! *cue spooky music*

One of my best friends from childhood was born on the thirteenth of January. I remember how she used to love when her birthday fell on a Friday, as it made it extra special. 🙂

In case you’re wondering, yes I am superstitious — about a lot of things. But I don’t have problems crossing the paths of black cats, not forwarding chain emails for fear of catastrophic reprisals, or even opening an umbrella in the house. Pish!

On the other hand, I’m not fond of the number 13, won’t tempt fate by visiting a haunted house, or go exploring a cemetery in the dark. I am  however going visiting today. And so are my characters 🙂

You can find me hanging out with my friend and Lyrical Press sister, Jessi Gage, who interviews me about TWELFTH SUN (I loved her questions!) here.

Elijah and Reagan (the hero and heroine of my romantic mystery) have decided to venture elsewhere and are being interviewed by my friend and Lyrical Press sister, Joanne Wadsworth. You can find their chatty interview here.

bigstock-Abandoned-haunted-house-on-a-h-23959007In closing, here are some interesting facts about Friday the 13th:

Paraskavedekatriaphobia and Friggatriskaidekaphobia are scientific terms used to describe fear of Friday the 13th. I, on the other hand, have a mild case of Triskaidekaphobia, which is fear of the number 13. Hmm. It must stem from childhood and that old black-and-white movie called Thirteen Ghosts. Anyone remember that? I think it terrified me as a kid.

And did you know most hotels don’t have a thirteenth floor, skipping right over it?

An example of my superstitious nature:

Each year the company I work for (on my day job) holds an annual “Kick-Off Event” in January. It’s a fun time where the company leaders provide a review of the previous year and kick-off the new year with a fresh set of goals. We have a lovely buffet lunch at a country club and spend the afternoon socializing. I book the venue and arrange everything. When I started planning 2012’s event I was horrified to realize the Friday we wanted fell on the 13th (we always hold it on a Friday). I was adamant and no one argued
— you can’t kick-off a New Year on a Friday the 13th!! So that year, we moved the event to Tuesday. Fortunately, I already checked the calendar and we’re in the clear for 2014. 🙂

Happy Friday the Thirteenth! I hope to see you at Jessi and/or Joanne’s blog haunts if you’re able to visit!

Wizards with Words: D.B. Sieders and Red Shoes for Lab Blues

bigstock-magic-book-9719930Hey, everyone! It’s Wizards with Words time and I’m delighted to introduce you to another new author. D.B. Sieders has dropped by today to chat about her writing routine and her hot new release, RED SHOES FOR LAB BLUES.

D.B. is a sister author at Lyrical Press and a talented storyteller. I quickly devoured RED SHOES FOR LAB BLUES, her debut release, and am eagerly looking forward to seeing more from her. So get comfy, settle in, and please say hello to D.B.

Let’s start with your writing routine. D.B. Do you have a favorite place and/or time of day to write?

As a working mom, I squeeze in my writing time from 8:00-10:00 P.M. at least three nights a week. Along with weekends and the occasional sprint during my lunch break at work, I manage a decent word count 🙂

Good for you! I often use my lunch break at work for writing too, or catching up with promo. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in a short amount of time when those hours are so precious! Which do you develop first, characters or plot?

For me, the characters come first. I catch a flash of one in action or a snippet of dialogue will run through my mind. That’s how they ‘introduce’ themselves. I’m lucky in that those flashes usually reveal some bit of conflict or character motivation, and then their journey to resolution takes shape as I write the first chapters or scene – so there’s my basic process.

I’m a character-first writer too. I love when they introduce themselves,  then hang around demanding attention. A persistent lot, LOL. Which do you find easier to write and why – description or dialogue?

Definitely dialogue! My characters love to talk, whether to each other or to themselves via internal dialogue. I normally crank out all of the conversation for a scene or chapter and then go back to flesh out the setting. I can normally visualize what my characters are doing as they speak, so the action tags work out pretty well.

Sounds like a good process! Please tell us about your new/debut release.

redshoesforlabbluesRed Shoes for Lab Blues is a contemporary romance novella featuring two dedicated and somewhat competitive biomedical cancer researchers and set against the backdrop of laboratory and pharmaceutical corporate politics, including an act of sabotage that could turn deadly.

I loved the story and your characters, especially Henry :). And the cover is awesome! For those who haven’t read the book, would you care to share how you chose your title?

Ah, now that would be telling… My heroine, Dr. Stacey Jamison, tends to be pretty focused on her work in the laboratory, to the point of sacrificing a social life. As her roommate points out, Stacey really needs to get out more and ‘recalibrate her normal meter.’ Well, during one such outing, complete with several tequila shots, a bar bet, and a pair of sexy red suede pumps, Stacey stumbles (literally) into her secret crush from work, Dr. Henry Chan. With looks, smarts, and more charm and sex appeal than any geek has a right to flaunt, he might just be the cure for her lab blues – if she can trust him.

Share one sentence – – yes, only one! – – of dialogue or description you love.

Her face split into that winning smile he’d come to adore as she replied, “Hmm, in that case, you should know I am capable of appreciating a man with a really big…vocabulary.”

LOL! Do you have any guilty pleasures (i.e., type of food, music, TV show, shoe obsession, silly distraction) you’d like to share?

We spend a lot of time on Animal Planet in my house (kid friendly), and I absolutely love ‘My Cat From Hell’ and ‘Call of the Wildman.’ The latter definitely counts as a guilty pleasure.

I love My Cat from Hell (feline fanatic here) and I admit to the guilty pleasure of Call of the Wildman. Hubs and I had never watched it before, then met someone who was friends with Ernie, the Turtleman, on a recent trip. After that, we had to give it a try. It’s definitely addictive!

Moving from TV to books, name 3-5 books you’d horde for a deserted island.

Oh, only 5?!?! Well, if I absolutely have to choose, I’d pick Stephen King’s The Stand, at least one or two of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood books (but it would be like choosing between my children), Jeaniene Frost’s Halfway to the Grave (still my favorite out of the series), Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs, and I’d sneak Jeri Smith-Ready’s Requiem for the Devil in while no one’s looking.

Okay, you can sneak, since I’d have to sneak in more than five too. 🙂 Isn’t it amazing how attached we become to our favorites? Now name a book that had a profound effect on you and explain why.

As per my deserted island reading list, I’d have to go with The Silence of the Lambs. Clarice Starling is one of the toughest heroines I’ve ever encountered in fiction. She has to be – you don’t go toe-to-toe with Hannibal Lecter and Jame Gumb unless you’re a real warrior. She represents the type of heroine I aspire to create in my own work. Harris does such an amazing job showing both her toughness and vulnerability, easy thing for a male writer to do when writing a female character. Hats off to him!

I’ll agree with you there. I’ve read several books by male authors who failed to capture the female mindset. Hmm..I wonder why that is so more glaringly noticeable than a female author who doesn’t capture the male mindset? I’ve seen the movie Silence of the Lambs, but never read the book. It sounds very intense!

Okay, new direction: Pets and writers seem to go together like peas in a pod. If you have pets tell us about them, and whether or not they shadow your writing time and space.

I have two cats, one long-haired Siamese and a short-haired mutt. They’re great mascots, and love to keep me company (and sometimes walk across my keyboard) while I’m typing.

A favorite pastime for cats 🙂

And now, a couple quick questions on your personal preferences:

Favorite season: Autumn
Favorite time of day: Early evening
Favorite color: Burgundy
Food you never grow tired of: Chocolate
Sunset picnic or night on the town: Oh, definitely sunset picnic – I’m a nature girl!

I love early evening and sunset picnics too. Thanks for being my guest today, D.B. I enjoyed having you, and wish you much success with your fab release, RED SHOES FOR LAB BLUES.

Thanks so much for having me, Mae!

HeadshotAuthor Bio, D.B. Seiders:
I was born and raised in East Tennessee and spent a great deal of my childhood hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains and wading barefoot in creeks, chasing salamanders, fish, and frogs.  We camped a lot, and we loved to tell stories while sitting around our campfire.

Those days of frog chasing sparked my interest in biology, which I pursued in college and later in graduate school.  I am a working scientist by day, but I never lost my love of sharing stories.  I’ve been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and am thrilled to be working as a writer.

Cover Reveal: Armed with Steele by Kyra Jacobs

It’s time for another cover reveal, which is definitely one of my favorite parts of blogging. I love seeing and sharing the wonderful covers that authors have developed for their books. Today I’m showcasing the cover for my Lyrical Press sister, Kyra Jacobs, and her upcoming romantic suspense release ARMED WITH STEELE. We have the same release day in August. Pretty cool, huh?

And now heat up again as you grab a gander of this HAWT cover, along with the blurb and excerpt below!

Title: Armed With Steele
Author: Kyra Jacobs
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: August 5th, 2013
Publisher: Lyrical Press

What happens undercover, stays under covers.

Jessica Hartley is looking for answers surrounding the mysterious car accident that nearly claimed the life of her best friend. She’s willing to risk it all, even her fledgling business, to find the person responsible and bring them to justice.

Nate Steele is more than willing to help Jessica, but for reasons all his own. He’s been watching the infamous Maxwell Office Solutions for some time now, convinced there’s more going on than meets the eye. When his chief issues a cease and desist order yet again, Nate has no choice but to accept inexperienced Jessica as an undercover partner outside the letter of the law.

Will Jessica and Nate be able to flush out Maxwell’s elusive villain, or will their growing attraction for each other sabotage their undercover ploy? Motives aren’t always what they seem when Jessica finds herself armed with Steele.

CONTENT WARNING: Beware drool-worthy men in uniform, touchy-feely coworkers, and vindictive ex-girlfriends.

The plan seemed simple enough. Apply for Grace’s old job at Maxwell, get hired, and then dig for clues while pretending to be an administrative assistant. Only, I didn’t have the foggiest idea how to be an AA. Didn’t know how to answer multi-lined phones, or schedule appointments, or write short hand. Heck, I didn’t even know if people still used short hand.

Worse yet, I’d actually have to get up at a set time and physically go to work. And socialize with co-workers. Probably even have to pretend I enjoyed it, too.

And if all that wasn’t enough, I’d also be putting myself in the direct line of a coma-inducing psycho. What if I ended up in the same state as Grace? Or worse?

I rolled over onto my other side and tried to silence the out and out war now raging in my head. I didn’t want another job. Didn’t want to deal with cubicles and coworkers, coffee makers and water coolers.

And I especially didn’t want to partner up with an extremely good-looking cop who, if I wasn’t careful, might accidentally pry the scabs off my still-healing heart. I just wanted my Grace back.

A Lyrical Press Urban Fantasy Romance

I’d run out of options.

He hurled me at the wall and I slumped down it. This dream needed to end, but my aching head scrambled my thoughts. I sought out my body and the room blurred, but I wasn’t going home. I was losing consciousness–in a dream. This couldn’t happen. Could it?

I squinted at my attacker as my vision dimmed. He sneered at me and then disappeared. I blinked. Where had he gone? My tunnel vision provided no clues. With forced concentration, things came into focus. Now two men–my attacker and another on top of him–struggled over the fireplace poker.

I continued seeking my body while deciphering the situation. One of the men grabbed the makeshift weapon, raised it and thrust it into the man on the floor. The victor turned to me.

I stared into his golden eyes.

“How do you know my name?” My consciousness slipped making my words heavy.

He knelt in front of me. “Are you okay?”

I shook my head.

“You need to get back to your body.”

“Yeah,” I murmured.

“Try hard to concentrate. Find your life cord. Feel its pull. It’s right there, ready to bring you home. Your body’s waiting, go to it.” His voice soothed and the tingling energy of my spirit connecting with my body ran through me.

“Have you been looking for me?” I asked, as my spirit fluctuated between worlds.

“Just go home. I’ll find you again.” I nodded in drowsy agreement as I drifted out of Clare’s dream into one of my own.

My head pounded and the metal park bench was unforgiving to my achy body. I needed to meet with someone but didn’t remember whom. I rubbed at my head and looked around. The sunlight aggravated the throbbing. Casting my gaze downward offered minimal relief.

A soft shuffling came nearer. I stared up into the handsome face of a stranger.

“Hi, Emory.”

“Do I know you?” I asked, rubbing my head again.

“I’m Grayson. I’ve been searching for you. I think you can help me.” His gentle tone stirred a fleeting memory.

I studied him. “How’s that?”

Someone called my name, and I looked over my shoulder. Nothing.

Grayson glanced behind me too. He continued with more urgency. “I’m stuck and I need you to help me get home.”

My name rang out again, louder.

“Johnathan?” I searched for my friend.

“Emory, I know you have to get back, but next time I see you, will you talk to me? Please?”

“I think I hit my head. I don’t know why I keep dreaming about you, but this isn’t real.”

“It’s real. I’m real.”

The voice calling my name became more demanding. My dream faded.

“Emory? I’ve arranged a meeting for us, soon. Please talk to me, I need y–”

My eyelids inched open.
