The Liebster Award

Icon for the Liebster AwardHey, friends! It’s been a very long while since I’ve done an award post or been nominated for one, so I was honored to be nominated for the Liebster Award by Jessica Bakkers. Jess has a great blog with a wide variety of content, including her ongoing posts about INFJs, the topic that connected us initially. If you don’t know Jessica, I highly recommend you check out her spot in the blogosphere and say hello. Lots of fun happenings over there! 🙂

For the Liebster Award, the rules are:

  1. Acknowledge the blog who nominated you and display the award.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger gives you.
  3. Give 11 random facts about yourself.
  4. Nominate 11 blogs
  5. Notify those blogs of the nomination.
  6. Give them 11 questions to answer.

The eleven questions Jessica sent my way are:

What is your favourite childhood memory?
Sitting under the stars with my father and imagining far off worlds.

Do you have pets? If yes, what are they?
One black cat named Raven. She’s a rescue I got as a kitten. She turned a year old the middle of May.

Best way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
Writing! Sunday afternoon is the time I routinely reserve for writing.

Favourite TV show?
I love Once Upon a Time, although I’m a little worried about the shake-ups coming next season. It’s the only hour of television I actually watch as it airs. I’m also a big fan of Gotham, which I DVR. Other than those two shows, I watch very little television.

Do you dance?
Dance you say? I LOVE to dance!! Point me in the direction of music and a dance floor, and all of my INFJ insecurities fall by the wayside.

You’re going to a deserted island. What three things are you going to take?
My husband, my cat and a truckload of books (that last counts as one, right)?

Favourite painter or painting?
My father. He was a classically trained artist who produced work in oils, pastel and charcoal, with oils as his primary medium.

Country or city?
Country all the way. I’m a small town girl.

What food do you seek out when you’re blue?
Chips. Oh, wait—I seek them out even when I’m not blue.

Weirdest word you know.
Macadam. I don’t know that it’s weird, but I’ve had critique partners and editors balk when I use it, stating “most readers won’t know what you’re referencing.” Now I force myself to type “asphalt” instead

Is the ‘u’ in colour necessary or just odd?
It’s the equivalent of fine champagne!

And now eleven facts about me. I’m cheating because these can actually be found on my blog:

  1. My favorite number is 12
  2. I adore cats
  3. I saw a UFO when I was 6 (don’t laugh!)
  4. I’ve taken two trips in search of the legendary Mothman
  5. I’m passionate about folklore and cryptozoology
  6. I like to watch bats soar overhead at twilight
  7. I like reading about Robert F. Kennedy
  8. If I could have a superpower, I’d choose the ability to fly
  9. I have a bizarre fear of bears
  10. I like exploring old graveyards
  11. I have a passion for history and old photographs

My eleven questions for those I nominate.

  1. You’ve been given a working time machine. What era of history would you visit?
  2. What is your totem animal? (Inspired by a post I recently saw on Jan Sikes’ blog).
  3. What was the first story you wrote?
  4. Beach or mountains?
  5. What is your favorite time of year?
  6. Name someone from history you find intriguing.
  7. What is your favorite fairy tale?
  8. When was the last time you played a game of chess?
  9. If you could travel to any city or country in the world, where would you go?
  10. Name your favorite cartoon when you were a kid.
  11. What mythical creature do you wish actually existed?

Now, I know not everyone likes to do these awards, but I’m going to  nominate:

Staci Troilo
Joan Hall
Carmen Stefanescu
Julie Holmes
Teri Polen
Marcia Meara
Jan Sikes
Judi Lynn
D. L. Finn
Robbie Cheadle
Lizzie Chantree

Have a go at it., ladies. There’s no time limit for turn around, and if I you’d like to pass, no worries. I know not everyone has time to do awards or cares to. Just have fun with it if you do. Thanks again to Jess for the nomination. I enjoyed doing this!

    • This was so much fun to do, Jess! Thanks again for nominating me.
Yes, my dad was a huge influence. He passed away at age 53 from colon cancer when I was 13, but we had a extremely close relationship. In addition to art, he dabbled in writing. Both he and my mother instilled my love for books and the written word!

  1. How lovely. Thank you for the compliment of the nomination Mae, as I would choose your blog too! I have been nominated before but it was a long time ago, so I would be honoured to answer your questions.
I enjoyed finding out more about you and your love for your family and writing shines through. Can you share any of your dad’s paintings with us? I would love to see them, as they sound amazing.

    • Lizzie, I’m so glad you’re going to run with the nomination. YAY!

I only have one of my dad’s paintings….they’re scattered among family members, but that’s a great idea about doing a post. I have one or two charcoal drawings and a watercolor too. Thanks for the wonderful idea, and have fun with the Liebster Award. I look forward to seeing your answers. 🙂

  2. Congrats on the Liebster Award-which always autocorrects to Lobster award. Great answers! I adore the word macadam-saying it and reading it- yes, you must put it in a book. I’m sure that’s how I learned it- by reading about it. Best!

    • Hi, Jena. Thanks for the laugh over the Lobster award. 😀 Since lobster tail ranks among my favorite foods that might actually be a good one for me, LOL.

And you’ve actually heard of macadam? Finally! Normally, I get lots of blinking or head scratching when I toss that word out there. It does have a great sound to it, doesn’t it? 🙂

Thanks so much for dropping by to comment!

  3. Jess and I just connected online. You’re right; she’s great.

It was so nice learning more about you. It sounds like you and your dad had a very special relationship, and now I know where you get your creative side.

I wanted to thank you for the nomination, but I had to stop accepting them when they were getting frequent and out of hand. I’ll post my answers in my FB group, though, if you want to read them. (Staci Troilo’s Novel Idea.) You posed some really interesting questions. 🙂

    • Staci, I’ll check out your list, as I’m curious about your answers. I stopped doing these quite a while ago too, but thought I’d give this one a whirl since Jess’s questions intrigued me. I’m so glad the two of you have connected.

And you are right about my dad! We had a very close relationship and he definitely taught me to imagine and create. My love of writing is directly from him, but my love of reading is from both parents. I’m so thankful for how they influenced me!

  4. Congrats on the award! It’s been a long time since I had one, and your questions will get my brain going, so I’ll give it a go:) Thanks for thinking of me. I got a chuckle out of your love of mythical monsters, but fear of bears. There aren’t any around us, so it’s easy for me to smile about them. It was fun to get to know you better.

    • I’m so glad you’re going to give the award a whirl, Judi. They are definitely fun for getting the brain going. And you know….I never thought about the oddity in my love of mythical monsters but my uber-freaky-out-of-control fear of bears. That is pretty bizarre, LOL.

I look forward to your answers!

    • How wonderful that your lucky number is also 12! I think there is whimsy and magic tied up in that number. 🙂

And so glad you’re enjoying Jess’s blog and her INFJ posts. I definitely fit that category!

  5. Congratulations, Mae, and great post! I’m happy to learn more about you. (Especially the bear thing, since guess what I’m talking about on #NotesFromTheRiver tomorrow?) 😀 And I’m glad I found time to check some of my email this morning, because I had no idea you’d nominated me. Thanks so much. I have a deadline today for a presentation I’m doing Saturday, so I won’t be able to participate until I finish that, but I promise I WILL take part as soon as I’m done. (There will be actual people at the event, and I figure I should have something to show them. 😀 ) Looking forward to answering your questions! Passing this along now. And CONGRATULATIONS on being awarded the Liebster! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: You ROCK! 🙂

    • Hiya, Marcia. I know you will kick butt at that presentation. I only wish I could be there to see it.

I’m delighted to nominate you and I can’t wait to see your answers (there is no rush). As for the bear thing…heebeegeebees! I thought I would be safe from them in Florida!

      Liked by 1 person

      • Nope. We have lots and lots and lots of Florida black bears. Dangerous run-ins aren’t frequent, but housing developments built close to wooded areas frequently have their garbage cans raided, bird feeders dumped, and hot tubs commandeered. Wait until you see the pics. You think alligators ringing your doorbell are bad! Hahahahaha. And yet with all this, I’ve only ever seen ONE in the wild, and it was only half grown. Poor you. Between alligators, snakes, bears, and deranged tourists, you never know what you’ll find when you visit Florida. *snort*

  6. Reblogged this on The Write Stuff and commented:
Look who just won a Liebster! My congratulations to Mae Clair for this award, and my thanks to her for nominating me, as well. (I’ll be participating in a day or so, as soon as I’ve wrapped up a deadline project). Check out Mae’s post, and learn some fun things about her. Then pass it along so others can “meet” her, too. Thanks!

      • I’ll try not to disappoint you. And thanks for the vote of confidence on Saturday’s presentation. I’m about 85% done with the PowerPoint program now. Hoping to finish it tonight, so I can go through it a couple of times before I have to do it in front of an audience. 😀

  7. Congratulations, Mae! You so deserve the Liebster, and I’m especially elated because you’ve shared so much about who you are. You are amazing! 🙂

  8. These are always so much fun. You learn a lot about people. 🙂

Speaking of Macadam…I was so shocked to learn how it was really pronounced. I didn’t know until I listened to an audio book with the word (I think it was a Stephen King). I used to put the emphasis on the first syllable with a smaller emphasis on the last syllable, if that makes sense. And the emphasis is actually on the second syllable. I found out that it was actually named after someone named McAdam. (Yeah, I had to look it up after I found out the pronunciation.)

Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself!

    • So glad you dropped by, Lauralynn! I had no idea that macadam was named after someone named McAdam. I’ve been learning a lot about that word from various sources lately, LOL.

I hopped over to the audio section on dictionary.com to see if it was said differently in my region, but it’s the same. I’,m glad you got to “hear” it and how cool that it popped up in a King book 🙂

  11. Congrats on the Liebster award, and thanks for the nomination, Mae! I’m sooo far behind in my blog reading. I love learning more about my online friends, and I’m with you on watching bats fly around at night. They are so cool! Thanks for pointing out Jessica’s site and Jan’s site. They both have great blogs I’m going to have to add to my reader. Have a great weekend!

    • Happy weekend, Julie! And I already saw your Leibster post, which was informative and fun (I even learned about a new fairy tale).

Glad to introduce you to Jess and Jan. They’re both lovely!

  12. I seriously behind on your blog! Recovering from vacation this week, I guess. Congrats on the award and I enjoyed reading your answers, Mae – have to admit, I had no idea what macadam was, so I’m glad you mentioned asphalt. I’m probably do what Staci’s doing and post my answers on my facebook page.

    • I knew you were just back from vacation, Teri, so no worries. Macadam is more like road paving but around my area, we often use it to refer to the surface of the road—macadam. It must be a regional thing, LOL.

And Facebook sounds like a fun way of sharing!
