Mae Clair: The Next Big Thing Reprise

So, here it is almost two full weeks since L.J. Kentowski tagged me in the Next Big Thing Blog Hop, and I’ve had the distinct honor of being tagged again by Sheri de Grom. If you don’t know Sheri, I suggest you hasten over to her blog pronto and become acquainted. Not only is she a writer and reviewer of women’s fiction, but she is also an advocate for mental health, Medicare reform and Veteran’s rights. In addition, she’s one of the most candid and giving people I’ve met online. Thank you, Sheri for the nomination.

Just to refresh everyone’s memory about the NBT hop, writers answer a series of questions related to their current WIP, then tag five other authors to join the hop. On the 28th of November, I shared information on the mystery/romance on which I’ve furiously been working called ECLIPSE LAKE. At the same time, I’m also working on the sequel to WEATHERING ROCK, Book 2 of the DeCardian Family Chronicles. Are you interested in learning more? I hope so! Here ’tis:

What is the working title of your book?
BLUE ENCHANTMENT, although that may change.

Where did the idea of the book come from?
It’s the second in a three-book series once again utilizing paranormal and romantic elements. In my debut novel WEATHERING ROCK, Winston (Wyn) DeCardian is a secondary character, but I felt he deserved his own book. I inserted a few references about his past and childhood in WEATHERING ROCK that I intend to flesh out in BLUE ENCHANTMENT. And, of course, I wanted to give him a romance with an HEA all his own. I’ve employed time-travel again, though the gap this time, is relatively small.

What genre does your book fall under?
The same as WEATHERING ROCK, paranormal / time-travel romantic suspense.

haircolors-08Which actors would you choose to play your characters in movie renditions?
Wyn is easy. I’ve always imagined him as Jim Caviezel the way Jim looked at the end of the  Count of Monte Cristo (when he was clean-shaven). Oh yeah, that’s definitely my Wyn! :D

As for Calliope LeMay, my heroine, I don’t have anyone set in mind. The same with my villain Sol Quinlan. He’s still taking shape in my head and Callie’s looks are a bit unusual – – red hair and lavender eyes.

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?
Wyn DeCardian meets a woman with a score to settle, who lived thirty years in the past and who may be tied to the mysterious explosion that resulted in his father’s death when he was two.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I’m hoping it will be picked up by Lyrical Press, the publisher for WEATHERING ROCK.

How long did it take you to finish the first draft of your project?
I’m still in the writing process right now and, at this point, am only about a quarter of the way into the story.

What other books would you compare this story to in your genre?
Um . . . well, I’d have to say WEATHERING ROCK since it employs many of the same elements (time-travel, romance and paranormal or fantasy elements) and some of the same characters.

Who or what inspired you to write this story?
I wanted to do something that referenced the blue-skinned people of Kentucky.  I’m known for my love of myth and legend but, the Blue People of Kentucky actually exist. Their unusual pigmentation is caused by a blood disorder first introduced by a man named Martin Fugate in the early 1800s. I can’t explain how that factors into the story but it does. From the moment I stumbled over a Yahoo newsfeed about it several years ago, I knew I wanted to implement it in a book.

Fonendoscopio y piruleta, corazón, San Valentín.What else about your book may pique readers’ interest?
For anyone who’s read WEATHERING ROCK they know that Wyn is a doctor. My heroine, Calliope LeMay is a gifted healer with magical talent. Naturally, science and magic are going to clash, right along with Wyn and Callie. Caleb and Arianna are also back for brief appearances, along with Lauren Talbot and Lucas Drake.

So there you have it—the low down on another project I have in the hopper.  Thanks again to Sheri de Grom for nominating me and now I’d like to nominate the following authors:

Cd Brennan
Calisa Rhose
Brynna Curry
Kate Meader
Tera Shanley

Mae Clair: Family and Friendship

It’s time to wing off to a new destination! Take flight with me as I flutter over to Joanne Stewart’s blog to share some thoughts about family, along with a brand new excerpt from WEATHERING ROCK.

Caleb DeCardian has a candid conversation with his descendent, Wyn, about his growing attraction for Arianna Hart. It’s up to Wyn to impart wisdom as only a man living with a Civil War ancestor can do.

In other news, I’ve updated the schedule for my blog with a list of upcoming guests, events and giveaways. You can find it here or by clicking the link for Blog Schedule in the black bar at the top. Lots of fun stuff and cool guests are on the horizon. Don’t miss them! :D

Mae Clair: It’s Howloween H*O*P Time!

Pumpkin weather is here. Ghost, ghouls and goblins roam the night, and the moon is a bloated orb of crimson and tangerine. It must be Howloween Hop time!

As a new author, this is only the second hop I’ve participated in. I had such a blast the last time, making many new friends, that I’m thrilled to be back and taking part in the latest funfest Drea Becraft has put together.

For a complete list of all participating authors, visit the Howloween Hop Event Page. The Hop runs through Monday 10/29 at midnight. I’ll be announcing the winner of the two prizes I’m giving away on Tuesday, October 30th, so check back to see if you’ve won.

I’LL BE AWARDING:
A $15.00 gift card to Amazon or Barnes & Noble (Winner’s Choice)

A copy of my new PNR/time-travel release WEATHERING ROCK for Kindle or Nook (Winner’s Choice)

So, as long as you’re here, grab some treats from my virtual goodie bag (I’ve got Rice Krispie Jack-o-Lanterns, chocolate spider clusters, peanut butter eyeball cookies, gummy worms, and marshmallow ghosts) and discover how a colonel from the Civil War, rival werewolves, and a modern day history teacher all connect.

I’d like to introduce you to Caleb DeCardian and Arianna Hart, the hero and heroine of WEATHERING ROCK.

As a former colonel for the Union Army during the Civil War, Caleb is used to being in charge and having others respond to his orders without question. Shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg, he’s transported to the 21st Century by a shower of ball lightning.

When WEATHERING ROCK opens, he’s already been living in the present for three years, hunting for the man who doomed him to life as a werewolf. Seth Reilly is his former friend, now a bitter rival, and the man responsible for cursing him with lycanthropy.

For someone who thrives on being in control, Caleb finds himself at the whim of a curse he’s powerless to resist, while facing the challenges of a new and confusing century. He has a highly defined sense of right and wrong; is noble at heart, but conflicted by what he’s become.

Then he meets Arianna Hart, my heroine, and suddenly he’s battling a different set of feelings. Romantic feelings.

Arianna finds Caleb bewildering, yet intriguing: courtly manners, smoldering sensuality and eyes that glow silver at night? When she sees Civil War photographs featuring a Union officer who looks exactly like Caleb, she begins to understand the man she is falling in love with harbors multiple secrets–some of which threaten the possibility of their happiness.

The path to true love and an HEA is never smooth, but these two have enormous odds stacked against them!

WEATHERING ROCK EXCERPT

“Stop it!” Arianna shook off Wyn’s grip, pivoting to face him. “Are you crazy?”

Before he could answer, something slammed against the door. Caleb screamed. The sound knifed through her like the violent jolt of an electrical wire.

“Caleb!” She launched herself at the door, panicked and terrified by the thought of the man she loved in horrific pain.

“Don’t!” Wyn stiff-armed her aside and grabbed the knob, forcibly holding it in place. “Get a chair. Something, anything! We’ve got to keep him locked inside.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Arianna, get a fricking chair. Now!”

There was another crash, and then a bang as something heaved against the door, making it shudder from top to bottom. Arianna heard a snarl that turned her blood to ice. The door rattled in its frame, weakening as something battered against it. Something inhuman locked in the room with Caleb.

A cold fist clamped over her stomach.

“Wyn, what’s going on?”

“Chair!” he spat. “Get me a damn chair.”

The raw urgency of his voice plowed through her confusion. She darted into the dining room, snagged a chair, and dragged it into the hallway. The thing in the parlor was still hammering away, heaving itself against the door in an attempt to burst through. Wyn’s face was white with strain as he struggled to hold the door shut with both hands. He rammed the top of the chair beneath the knob, wedging it securely into place. A blood-thirsty howl exploded from the other side, kicking Arianna’s heartbeat into overdrive.

“My God, Wyn, what’s going on?” She lurched for the door.

“Don’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.” Wyn caught her around the waist and swung her up against the wall.

She tried to squirm free. “I know Caleb’s trapped in there. We have to help him! There’s something in the room. Can’t you hear it?”

He held her wrists, pinning her arms to the wall. “Listen to me!” His eyes were wild, his face inches from hers. With a single frenetic skip of her heart, she realized he was as terrified as she was.

“There’s nothing in the room. Only Caleb. Do you hear me, Arianna? It’s Caleb.”

“No!” She shook her head, unwilling to believe what he told her, but another ear-splitting snarl fanned her fear higher. Nothing made sense. Not the stark fear in Wyn’s eyes, the sweat-slickened grip of his palms crushing her wrists or the chillingly inhuman sounds coming from the parlor. The man she loved could never sound so guttural or barbarous.

“I don’t care!” She ripped free of his hold. “I don’t care if he’s by himself or in there with something else. You have to help him!”

She lunged for the door, but Wyn grappled her around the waist, holding fast. They were still struggling when the sound of shattering glass rang through the narrow center hall of Weathering Rock.

The Next Best Thing Challenge

Cool things are happening! I’ve been tagged by the wonderfully talented L.J. Kentowski, author of GUARDIAN OF FATE to participate in the Next Best Thing Challenge.  And hey, as an extra bonus, in case you didn’t know – – you still have a chance to win a free ebook copy of GUARDIAN OF FATE on LJ’s blog, LJ Writes. Her contest ends tomorrow, so check it out while there’s still time. It’s a great read!

Now let me tell you about the challenge.  Here’s the breakdown:

Answer the 10 NBTC questions below
Spread the fun and tag 5 awesome people to participate!

So . . . ready, set, go!

What is the title of your book/WIP?
Weathering Rock

Where did the idea of this book come from?
A photograph and a passion for civil war history.

What genre would your book fall under?
Paranormal romantic suspense with time travel.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
The hero is a no-brainer.  Remember that photograph I mentioned?  I’ve always had a passion for Civil War history and, one day while surfing online, I happened on a photo of David Soul from a part he had in Manions of America. It was enough to make me start spinning story ideas of my own. Toss is a name I had tucked away (Weathering Rock) that I intended to use for an old home, and it was enough to spur my muse into action. Here’s my “cast” list:

Caleb DeCardian
David Soul

Arianna Hart
Felicity Jones

Wyn DeCardian
Jim Caviezel

Rick Rothrock
Chris Hemsworth

Lauren Talbot
Scarlett Johansson

Lucas Drake
Tim Daly

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?
Former Civil War colonel, Caleb DeCardian, is thrust forward in time to the present where he meets fetching Arianna Hart while searching for the former friend who cursed him to live as a werewolf.

Is your book published or represented?
WEATHERING ROCK will be published on October 8, 2012 by Lyrical Press.

How long did it take you to write it?
Eight months. Then I set it aside for several years, dug it out, dusted it off, and did three rounds of edits in seven months, whittling 27k from the original word count. A friend of mine encouraged me to submit it to a publisher, and I decided to give it a shot, thinking ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’

What other books in your genre would you compare it too?
Hmm…that’s a toughie. I’m not sure there really is anything I could compare it with apples-to-apples. Certainly any author doing time-travel or writing about werewolves. In my case, Caleb is not part of a pack, and there is a fair amount of references to the Civil War woven throughout and underlying elements of mystery.

Which authors inspired you to write this book?
I can’t honestly say I was inspired by another author. WEATHERING ROCK was the result of taking varied elements I’m passionate about (history, werewolf folklore, old homes, romance, mystery) and weaving a tapestry from them in the form of a story. There are certainly authors I admire, but I’ve been writing since grade school, so my inspiration really comes from being driven to create.

Tell us anything else that might pique our interest in your book.
I’ve been sharing  elements of the novel for sometime on my blog, but there is something that occurs in the book I’ve purposefully avoided mentioning. I hope it will come as a huge surprise to my readers when they stumble across it. All I’ll say is that there’s more to the time travel element than just Caleb being thrust forward into the present *sly grin*

I’m also planning on making WEATHERING ROCK into a three-book series called The DeCardian Family Chronicles. Wyn DeCardian will be featured as the hero in book number two.

WOW! This has been fun.  Thanks for the tag, L.J!

And now, the five gifted authors I’d like to tag for the next round:

Donna Cummings
Stephanie Ingram
Coleen Kwan
JM Stewart
Calisa Rhose

Weathering Rock: SSS 6-10-12

Happy Sunday, Sixers!  It’s time for another round of six sentence snippets. Once again, I’m posting from my upcoming time-travel/paranormal release WEATHERING ROCK. Thanks to everyone who has been commenting and following along. I’ve made so many wonderful friends through SSS. You guys rock! :)

And now onward to the six!

For the last few weeks, Caleb DeCardian has been trying to coax Arianna Hart into having dinner with him (in hopes of atoning for something he’s done to upset her). There is some back and forth verbal tug-of-war but she finally agrees when he tells her to pick the night. She chooses Thursday evening and he hedges (yes, I skipepd that part). She tells him if it doesn’t suit they can forget it altogether, at which point Caleb concedes.

Later he tells his ‘brother,’ Wyn DeCardian, about the date he’s made and the two end up in an argument.  The six picks up there with Caleb speaking first, followed by Wyn (I’m snipping a bit to make it work):

 ~ooOOoo~

“It may surprise you, Winston, but I am intimately conscious of the lunar cycle. The moon may look full on Thursday, but it will be waning at ninety-seven percent.”

“Not on Wednesday, it won’t.  I’m going to have to lock you up like I do every month and you’re going to turn into that thing. The next day–Thursday, in case it’s eluded you–you’ll be worthless as shit. You’ll be lucky if you can walk down the steps without falling on your ass.”

 ~ooOOoo~

To find out more about the nature of Wyn’s true relationship to Caleb and Caleb’s connection to full moons, check out my WEATHERING ROCK page

Can’t get enough of Six Sentence Sundays?  Then hop on over to the SSS website for a complete list of all the participating authors. Good reads abound!
